A major and vital part of cardiovascular instruments are vascular forceps and clamps. They, almost all of them, are atraumatic in nature.
Atraumatic as the name suggests “a-traumatic” i.e. without trauma.
Atraumatic forceps have serrated tips manufactured in a way to attain “No-to-Minimal” damage to the tissues or arteries whilst grasping during a surgical procedure. Since a cardiovascular surgery or procedure requires extremely delicate handling, atraumatic Vascular forceps and clamps are a necessity.
Vascular Forceps generally refers to those forceps which are used for holding delicate tissue and arteries. Their tips have atraumatic serrations to ensure “No-to-Minimal” damage. They can be either ratchet or tweezer style. Vascular Clamps are used to suspend blood supply by clamping the blood vessels temporarily during surgery. These clamps are normally in ratchet style locking mechanism.
Probably the most commonly used type of forceps and clamps are DeBakey.
